History. Fundamental and scientific-applied study of relief environment for sustainable development of natural-economic systems as well as a safety of life activity of population is the main goal of researches of modern geomorphological science in Kazakhstan.

Department was founded in August 1991 on the initiative of Director of the Institute, Professor N.K. Mukitanov and Vice Director A.R. Medeu on the base of the Laboratory of Physical Geography and sector of geomorphology of the Institute of Geology named after K.I. Satpayev. The first Head of Department, who determined main directions of it’s development, was E.I. Nurmambetov.

On the base of the Department, first time in the Institute started development of GIS cartography, which is today wide used in all structure departments of the Institute.

Today, the Department is the only specialized research division of geomorphology in Kazakhstan and it is a rightful continuity of geomorphological school founded by G. Ts. Medoyev in the Institute of Geological Sciences named after K.I. Satpayev.

Department consists of two thematic groups: geomorphology and toponymy.

Main directions of researches:

Employees of the Department make fundamental and scientific-applied studies of relief for achieving the goals of sustainable development of nature-economic systems and safety of live activity of population:

  • Modern natural-anthropogenic geomorphogenesis of Kazakhstan;
  • Study and mapping of modern natural-anthropogenic relief building processes of Kazakhstan;
  • Monitoring of dangerous geomorphological processes: moving sands, mudflows, landslides, rockslides, karst, piping;
  • Ecological-geomorphological researches in the areas of intensive economic development;
  • Assessment of risk of occurance and development of dangerous exogenous processes;
  • Study of the role of geomorphological processes in activation of desertification;
  • GIS thematic and atlas cartography of relief environment;

Scientific analysis of etymology and transliteration of the restored historical geographical names.

Staff

Department consist of 13 employees. Expeditions and field researches

Department of Geomorphology and GIS cartography annually makes field researches within Almaty region. Aim of field researches is an assessment of dynamic of modern exogenous relief-forming processes of mountain and flat territories within Almaty region and installation of bench marks in the frames of creation of monitoring network. Field researches were made for the following processes: rockslides, landslides, denudation, erosion processes and abrasion. There were installed benchmarks and photofixation at the certain sites.

Monitoring of relieve-forming processes is done for achieving the goal of conditions of the study of the development and active processes, making prognoses of their development on the territory of Almaty region, for working out recommendations, for prevention of development of dangerous relief-forming processes and to reduce their consequences for the purpose of safety of nature use in mountain and flat territories.

 The laboratory is equipped with modern equipment and instruments:
