Central Asian Regional Glaciological Center as a category II under the auspices of UNESCO

On May 28, 2020, on the basis of the Agreement between the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated May 29, 2012 and the order of the Joint Stock Company "Institute of geography and water security" dated May 27, 2020 No. 14-П, the Central Asian Regional Glaciological Center as a category II under the auspices of UNESCO was created.

Director of the center - Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan "In the field of science and technology named after al-Farabi" (2019) - Igor Seversky Vasilyevich.

Direction. Development of a scientific, methodological and analytical base for assessing modern and predicted changes in the cryosphere of the runoff formation zone and their consequences for the water, food and environmental security of the countries of the Central Asian region.

Purpose:  Creation of a scientific, methodological and analytical base for assessing the modern and predicted dynamics of the cryosphere of the runoff formation zone (snow cover, glaciers, underground ice) and its manifestations in the river runoff in the context of solving the problems of water, food and environmental security of the countries of the Central Asian region.

  • Monitoring of climate-related changes in the cryosphere components of the zone of river flow formation in the Central Asian region.
  • Assessment of the current and forecast dynamics of snowiness in the runoff formation zone (mountain-glacial basins of the Pamir, Gissar-Alai, Tien Shan, Altai).
  • Assessment of current and predicted changes in the cryosphere of the zone of formation of river runoff in Central Asia and their likely consequences for the economy, water, food and environmental security of the countries of the region.
