The jubilee meeting of the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan on UNESCO and ISESCO was held in Almaty on April 4, 2023, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of this structure and evaluating the implementation of the UNESCO medium-term strategy in Kazakhstan.
E.T. Karin, chairman of the National Commission for UNESCO and ISESCO in Kazakhstan and the State Counselor of the Republic of Kazakhstan, stated that the meeting was a report on the activities of the National Commission for 2021-2022 and paid special attention to the problem of the protection of UNESCO objects on the territory of our country. Moreover, he informed all participants about the expected important event for Kazakhstan, the visit of the Director General of UNESCO Mrs. Audrey Azule and offered a series of measures to improve the activity of the National Commission.
The general secretary of the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan on UNESCO and ISESCO affairs in Kazakhstan and the moderator of the session, Baisabaeva A.G, gave a welcome speech and a brief report on the activities of the National Commission.
Yergaliev K.A., the Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan made a speech at the meeting and informed the participants about the concept for development of higher education and science in the Kazakhstan for 2023-2029 period, developed by the ministry and presented the main results of the activity.
The Vice-Minister told the participants that the only Central Asian regional glaciological center (category 2) under the auspices of UNESCO was created at the Institute of Geography and Water Safety in accordance with the agreement between the Government of Republic of Kazakhstan and the United Nations in 2020, which was later transferred to a direct subordination of the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and higher education by Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated by September 13, 2021 No. 636.
The State Councilor of Kazakhstan was interested in the Vice-Minister on implementation of the President's K. Tokaev Order on provision of the advanced Institute of Geography and Water Safety with its own building. However, Ergalieva K.A, the State Secretary of the Republic of Kazakhstan was satisfied with the fact that this issue is still being worked on. The State Councilor, E. Karin noted the need to speed up solution to the problem of providing the Institute and the Glacial Center with their own buildings.
The meeting was attended by the National Chairman of the Hydrological Committee of the National Commission for UNESCO and ISESCO, the Chairman of the Board of JSC "Institute of Geography and Water Safety", Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Geographical Sciences Medeu A.R and the Director of the Central Asian Regional Glaciological Center under the auspices of UNESCO, Professor Balykbaev T.O.
The participants of the meeting touched on issues related to anthropogenic climate change of the Earth, preservation of diversity of flora and fauna as well as a preservation of world cultural heritage and many other issues.
